Poughkeepsie revision rhinoplasty, or revision “nose job”, refers to the surgical changes to a nose that has already undergone surgery in the past. Revision rhinoplasty is much more complex, difficult, and less predictable compared to a primary rhinoplasty (having a nose reshaping for the first time). Our Board Certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons have extensive experience with revision rhinoplasty.
There are many reasons patients request revision rhinoplasty. For some patients, their initial concerns may still not be addressed and others may develop difficulty breathing. This can be due to many reasons, including too little or too much tissue or cartilage being removed at the initial surgery.
Our surgeons are experts in the field of rhinoplasty and can harvest cartilage from the nose or other parts of the body (ears and rib, for example) that can be used for the revision surgery. This improves the external appearance and breathing functionality.
Who is a Candidate for Revision Rhinoplasty?
Healthy men and women who have already had a primary rhinoplasty and are unhappy with the postoperative appearance, or who are experiencing difficulty breathing through the nose, may be excellent candidates for revision rhinoplasty. During a consultation, our experienced facial plastic surgeons will perform a facial analysis and help you determine the best course of action to deliver the most appealing results.
Revision rhinoplasty generally requires an open technique, using a small incision under the tip of the nose. This allows enough access to the cartilage and bone responsible for the shape and function of the nose. These structures are carefully adjusted to achieve the desired appearance and function. If too much cartilage has been previously removed or damaged, it may be necessary to use cartilage from the ear or elsewhere such as the rib in order to reconstruct the nose. As each nose is unique in both appearance and function, the revision rhinoplasty procedure and technique are tailored to each patient’s individual aesthetic and functional needs. Sutures are used to close the incisions and a small external splint is placed. Internal splinting is occasionally required during revision rhinoplasty.
What is the Recovery like from Revision Rhinoplasty?
Our surgeons employ only the most advanced, state-of-the-art revision rhinoplasty techniques. As each nose is unique in both appearance and function, the procedure and techniques used are tailored to each patient’s individual aesthetic and functional needs. Revision rhinoplasty is usually performed under deep sedation or general anesthesia because of the increased level of complexity and time required.
Revision rhinoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis. Most patients return home a few hours after surgery. Length of recovery time depends on the complexity of the procedure and varies from patient to patient. Prescription pain medication is usually only required for the first few days. Mild discomfort, bruising, or swelling lasts 7 to 10 days. Most patients are able to return to work, school, or other daily activities within about one week. Avoidance of contact sports is recommended for about one month after surgery. Our experienced surgeons reduce bruising and recovery time with the application of state-of-art techniques and the use of homeopathic or herbal options. Detailed postoperative and aftercare instructions will be provided to each patient.
Those patients considering revision rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping, should carefully evaluate their surgeon’s credentials and training. Our doctors are Board Certified, with extensive knowledge to deliver the best cosmetic results while safeguarding proper breathing function.
